The 2026 March Madness Snub List: Who’s Getting Left in the Cold?

Selection Sunday is creeping up on us like a full-court press, and if you aren’t sitting on a top-four seed, you’re probably looking at the bracket projections with a knot in your stomach. This is the time of year when "quality losses" stop being a thing and "must-win games" become the only currency that matters.
At Hood Report, we’ve been tracking the movement, the metrics, and the momentum. While the headlines are busy chasing Duke’s dominance with Cameron Boozer or Arizona’s powerhouse run with Koa Peat, there’s a much darker story unfolding on the bubble.
Some fanbases are about to have their hearts ripped out. We’re looking at storied programs and high-octane mid-majors that are currently on the outside looking in. Here is the 2026 March Madness Snub List: the teams currently getting left in the cold.
St. John’s: The Queens Quandary
We have to start in New York. St. John’s was supposed to be the "resurgence" story of the year. Instead, they’ve become the poster child for the bubble's volatility. Despite flashes of brilliance, the Red Storm has struggled with the one thing the committee hates most: consistency.
They’ve played a schedule that looks like a gauntlet, but the lack of signature Quad 1 wins is screaming louder than the Madison Square Garden crowd. When we look at the metrics, they’re hovering in that dangerous 45-55 NET range. For a Big East team, that’s no-man's land.
If they can’t find a way to navigate the conference tournament and snag at least two high-level wins, they’ll be watching the dance from the couch. The talent is there: they have the length and the speed: but the execution in the final four minutes of games has been their Achilles' heel all season.
Memphis: The Talent vs. Tournament Debate
Memphis is always the most polarizing team in the country. This year is no different. On paper, the Tigers look like a team that could make a Sweet 16 run. On the court, they look like a team that might not even get the invite.
The issue for Memphis in 2026 isn't the roster; it’s the "bland" résumé. They’ve feasted on the bottom half of their conference but crumbled when the lights got bright against Top 25 opponents. As we discussed in our recent Patreon Snub List breakdown (the one Sonny has the full notes on), Memphis is suffering from "empty calorie syndrome." Lots of wins, very little substance.
If the committee sees a team that can't win on the road against Quad 1 opponents, they aren't going to give them the benefit of the doubt over a mid-major that dominated their league.

The Patreon Snub List: The "Deep Dive" Points
Earlier today, I shared some specific talking points with Sonny for our Patreon community. If you’re following the Hood Report closely, you know we don't just look at the scoreboards; we look at the efficiency ratings and the "eye test" factors that the committee members actually argue about in that hotel room in Indianapolis.
Here’s the gist of what we’re seeing:
The "Bid Thief" Threat: The MWC and the Atlantic 10 are primed to produce bid thieves. When a team like VCU or New Mexico loses in their conference tournament, they don't just disappear: they move to the bubble and start squeezing out the "power" conference teams like St. John's.
The Quad 4 Blemish: One "bad" loss in 2026 is worth three "good" wins. Several teams on this list are carrying a November or December loss to a sub-200 NET team that is currently acting like an anchor on their postseason hopes.
Net Efficiency vs. Win-Loss: We’re seeing a massive gap this year between teams that look good on KenPom and teams that actually have a winning record against the field.
Indiana and the Big Ten Gauntlet
Indiana is currently sitting in a state of absolute limbo. Their at-large odds have plummeted to about 60% after a disastrous three-game skid. Losing to Illinois, Purdue, and Northwestern in succession didn't just hurt their ranking; it destroyed their margin for error.
They rank in the mid-40s nationally in most résumé metrics, but they’re entering the Big Ten tournament with zero momentum. For a program with this much history, being on the bubble feels like a failure, but the reality is that the Big Ten is so deep this year that "average" doesn't get you a plane ticket to the tournament.
VCU and New Mexico: The Mid-Major Heartbreak
If you want to talk about "getting left in the cold," look at VCU and New Mexico. Both teams have the DNA of tournament spoilers, but the numbers are working against them.
New Mexico saw their at-large chances drop to 40% after a brutal loss to Nevada. Their head-to-head loss to San Diego State is the tiebreaker that might keep them out. Meanwhile, VCU is trending in the wrong direction. They are 0-5 against Quad 1 opponents. You can’t tell the committee you belong with the big boys when you haven't beaten a single one of them all year.

The "First Four Out" Trap
Right now, the projected "First Four Out" includes names that usually command respect:
New Mexico: Struggling with consistency in a tough MWC.
Ohio State: Too many close losses in a brutal Big Ten.
San Diego State: Living on past reputation while the current metrics slide.
Virginia Tech: A few big wins masked by a mountain of mediocre performances.
Then you have Santa Clara and USC. USC’s home loss recently was essentially the nail in the coffin. Unless they go on a miraculous run in the conference tournament, they are looking at an NIT bid at best.
Betting the Bubble: Hood Report Analysis
For the bettors in the room: the ones who join the group of informed Sports Bettors: the bubble is where the value lives.
When a team like St. John’s or Memphis is playing for their lives, the spread becomes secondary to the desperation. We’ve seen historical trends where "bubble teams" over-perform in the first round of conference tournaments because they are playing for their professional lives, only to gas out in the semi-finals.
If you're looking for an edge, stop betting on the locks. Start betting on the teams that know they are being snubbed. There is a specific kind of energy that comes with having your back against the wall.

What Happens Next?
The next ten days will determine everything. We are moving from the "analysis" phase into the "survival" phase. If you're a fan of a bubble team, every whistle is going to feel like a personal attack.
At Hood Report, we’re going to be tracking these movements daily. We aren't just looking at who's in; we're looking at why they're in and how they’ll match up against the giants like Michigan and Arizona.

Selection Sunday is coming. Don’t get left in the cold.
I'm handing this off to Sonny now to get the social clips ready and the Patreon deep-dive scheduled. Keep an eye on the Discord for the real-time bubble updates as the conference tournaments kick off!
